Gross salary is the employment amount before employee deductions. Net pay is what remains after deductions that apply to the employee. In Cyprus, a useful gross-to-net estimate keeps income tax separate from Social Insurance and the General Healthcare System contribution (GHS), because each follows its own rules.
What sits between gross salary and net pay?
Income tax
For 2026, taxable income is charged progressively: 0% up to €22,000; 20% from €22,001 to €32,000; 25% from €32,001 to €42,000; 30% from €42,001 to €72,000; and 35% above €72,000. Eligible deductions, exemptions and allowances can affect the amount placed into those bands.
Employee Social Insurance
The employee contribution is calculated on insurable earnings, subject to the applicable ceiling. Tax Buddy's 2026 configuration uses an employee rate of 8.8%. An employer also has separate obligations, but ordinary employer costs are not deductions from the employee's gross salary.
GHS
GHS is separate from income tax and Social Insurance. Tax Buddy's 2026 employee calculation uses 2.65%, subject to the annual contribution ceiling across relevant income sources.
A simple gross-to-net illustration
Suppose an employee enters gross annual salary of €36,000 for 2026. The calculation first identifies the supported deductions and any applicable exemption or allowance, then applies the progressive bands to taxable income. Employee Social Insurance and GHS are calculated separately. Subtracting the calculated employee amounts from gross income gives an indicative annual net figure, which the tool can display over 12 or 13 salary payments.
This is a method illustration, not a quoted net salary. The actual amount depends on the user's selections and circumstances. A payslip may also include items outside Tax Buddy, such as employer-specific pension deductions, benefits, reimbursements, arrears or other payroll adjustments.
What Tax Buddy can help you estimate
The Zeno FinLab Cyprus Tax Calculator estimates supported Cyprus income tax, employee Social Insurance, GHS and selected related deductions for the chosen tax year. It can account for a 13th-salary payment schedule, but that setting changes how the annual net estimate is spread; it does not create a separate tax rule. The tool is not a payroll service and does not reproduce every employer payslip item.
Important limitations
Net pay depends on complete payroll information, eligibility conditions and correct treatment of income. This article and the calculator are educational and do not constitute tax, financial, accounting or legal advice. Compare estimates with your payslip and official records, and use a suitably qualified professional for individual questions.
